Trent University's 2004/05 Writers Reading Series Continues |

Judy Fong Bates reads from her work on February 9
Ms. Fong Bates was born in China and immigrated as a child to Canada, where she lived in several small Ontario towns. Formerly an elementary school teacher and always a storyteller, Ms. Fong Bates is the author of China Dog and other Tales from a Chinese Laundry, a collection of short fiction published by Sister Vision Press in 1997. Her stories have been broadcast on CBC radio and published in Fireweed: A Feminist Quarterly, This Magazine, The Canadian Forum, and The Oxford Book of Stories by Canadian Women in English. Her first novel, Midnight at the Dragon Cafe, enthusiastically received and reviewed, was published by McClelland and Stewart in 2004 and will be published by Counterpoint in the USA in 2005. The Department of English organized the first Writers Reading Series in the 1988/89 academic year. Its members decided to mount a reading series which would not only bring to the University established writers who are well-known on the reading circuit, but also act as a showcase for newer writers who have not yet developed a wide audience. Trent University's Department of English Literature is pleased to announce the beginning of the 2004/05 Writers Reading Series for the New Year on Wednesday, February 9 at 5 p.m. in Room I-110 of the Gordon Willey Building at Trent at Durham/UOIT in Oshawa with writer Judy Fong Bates.
Don McKay was born in Ontario and currently lives in Victoria, B.C. Mr. McKay's Another Gravity (McClelland & Stewart, 2000) was awarded the Governor General's Award for Poetry. Night Field (1991) also won the Governor General's Award. Mr. McKay has been an editor and publisher with Brick Books, a teacher of Creative Writing and English Literature at the University of Western Ontario and the University of New Brunswick, editor of The Fiddlehead, and Associate Director of Poetry, Writing and Publishing at the Banff Centre for the Arts. Among Mr. McKay's other publications (all McClelland and Stewart) are Camber (2004), Apparatus (1997), Sanding Down this Rocking Chair on a Windy Night (1987), and Birding, or Desire (1983).
Suzette Mayr, an Alberta writer, has published three novels: Moon Honey (NeWest Press 1995), The Widows (NeWest Press 1998), and Venous Hum (Arsenal Pulp Press 2004). Her poetry and short fiction has appeared in anthologies, magazines, journals, and in galleries featuring her collaboration with visual artists. Known for their wit and critical vigour, Ms. Mayr's magic realist explorations of race, sex, and family experiment with language and form. Past president of the Writer's Guild of Alberta, Ms. Mayr lives and writes in Calgary. She has taught at the Alberta College of Art and Design and is currently Assistant Professor of Creative Writing in the English Department at the University of Calgary.
