He acquired a working fluency of seven European languages. Prof. Franklin emigrated to Canada in 1960 and taught French and coached tennis, squash and rugby at Trinity College School in Port Hope, until 1968. At Trent, Prof. Franklin served as the Chairman of the French Section of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures from 1989 to 1992. He also helped to create the University's Language Lab and the Year Abroad Program with the University of Nantes, in France. He had a lifelong love of teaching, learning and language.
