Trent Students Invited to Apply to CBC Radio's Peter Gzowski Internship Program

Deadline for applications February 4

Have you always wanted to say, "This is (your name here), reporting for CBC news"?

If so, your big break may be on the horizon. Trent University students in the final year of an honours program have the opportunity once again this year, to apply for the annual CBC Radio Peter Gzowski internship program. The deadline for applications is February 4.

CBC Radio established the internship program to honour the memory of the late Peter Gzowski and to offer training and broadcast opportunities to eligible final-year students in four participating universities across the country.

An acclaimed broadcaster, author and journalist Peter Gzowski became the eighth Chancellor of Trent in July 1999. The CBC radio host of Morningside (1982 to 1997) received an honorary degree from Trent in 1987 for outstanding public service and broadcasting. In 1992, he donated his papers to the Trent Archives because of his affinity for what Trent has come to stand for. Mr. Gzowski's presence lives on at Trent, in the college that bears his name.

As a Gzowski intern, you would be following in the footsteps of Trent alumnae Bethany Or and Hollis Moore. The 17-week internship in radio production will be offered from May 2 to August 26 this year and the opportunity is open to Canadian citizens and landed immigrants.

The four selected interns, from McGill University in Montreal, Memorial University in St. John's, Simon Fraser University in Burnaby and Trent, will each receive a week of training in the basics of radio production at the Canadian Broadcasting Centre in Toronto. Each will spend the rest of the internship in a different location learning about the craft of making great radio. Interns will get first-hand experience in contributing to radio programming in a variety of ways. Interns will be paid about $800 per week and travel and accommodation expenses will be paid for the training week in Toronto. Any other travel or accommodation expenses will not be covered.

"We are very pleased that Trent University has been chosen to participate in the Peter Gzowski internships," says Trent's Dean of Arts and Science Colin Taylor. "As a Chancellor at Trent University from 1999 to 2002, Peter had many strong connections to this university. Trent holds a special place within Canada's academic community, and it will be an honour to see a Trent student awarded another internship at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation."

And according to Ms. Or, Trent's first Peter Gzowski intern, those who know they can be genuinely interested in scores of subjects, should apply for the internship program - "no question."

Without walls, departments or disciplines, Ms. Or says she had the opportunity to think about many things at the CBC - art, science and sports. She likened her pursuit of ideas at the CBC to her time at Trent.

"You're always looking for ideas... The whole world becomes your palette," she says.
