Rower Peter Van Rooijen Wins National Championship | ||
Mr. Van Rooijen was a bronze medallist in last year's championships. "This year Peter commanded the race taking an early lead by the first 250m and increased his lead through the middle 1000m of the race. His final sprint to the finish left the other scullers eight seconds behind battling for the silver," said Head Coach Carol Love. Mr. Van Rooijen, and fourth-year business student, who has represented Canada on the U23 team in the past two years in the men's eights, has developed into the nations top university sculler.
In the women's pair event Marie LaForme teamed up with Lauren Chewter racing to a second place in the B Final, being edged out by Guelph University. Later in the day, Ms. Chewter and Ms. Laforme rowed in the Trent Women's eight (OUA silver medallists), as they were defeated by McGill in the B final, placing them sixth in the country. UBC women's eight and Western U upset the defending champion UVIC women in the final, while Queen's was fourth. The men's pair of Mark Basterfield and Edward Rushton, racing in their first Canadian Championship placed eighth. The Trent men's eight placed eighth in a field of 15 schools. "It was a good season and with the return of the whole women's team and few graduates leaving on the men's side the future looks encouraging for Trent rowing," stated Coach Love.
