Honours Abound for Trent's Founding President

As Trent University celebrates its 40th anniversary, its founding president has been honoured on two fronts for his contribution to the Canadian landscape.

As announced October 18 in Charlottetown, P.E.I., the Fathers of Confederation Buildings Trust has named a lecture series in his honour. The first Symons Lecture is scheduled for next month at the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown. Quebec Premier Jean Charest will deliver the inaugural Symons Lecture and be joined by P.E.I. Premier Patrick Binns and Yukon Premier Dennis Fentie.

The Symons Lecture will provide a national platform for a distinguished Canadian to discuss the current state and future prospects of Confederation. The lecture, which is intended to be broadcast and published, will be held each year to mark the anniversary of the meetings of the Fathers of Confederation in Charlottetown in 1864.

"The goal of this important initiative of the Board and management of the Confederation Centre is to encourage Canadians to think about Canada and to promote discussion about our country, particularly the issues affecting it now and in the future," stated H. Wayne Hambly, Chair of the Fathers of Confederation Buildings Trust. "It is in keeping with the fundamental purpose of the Centre which was established as the National Memorial to the Fathers of Confederation in 1964, the centenary of the Charlottetown Conference, through the combined efforts of all the provinces, the federal government and many private citizens."

Professor Symons is a Confederation Centre Board member.

The announcement of the lecture series came on the heels of an October 12 Peterborough city council meeting at which Professors Symons was presented with a key to the city. Mayor Sylvia Sutherland is quoted in The Examiner as having said that Professor Symons' "reputation goes far beyond this country".

"He's not just one of Peterborough's most distinguished citizens, he's one of Canada's most distinguished citizens," said Mayor Sutherland.
