Professor Julia Harrison - CASCA President-Elect Trent University's Chair of Women's Studies and associate professor in Anthropology Julia Harrison has recently been elected as incoming president of the Canadian Anthropology Society / la société canadienne anthropologie (CASCA). She will take over as president in January 2005 for an 18-month term. Professor Harrison has been an active member of CASCA since she was a master's degree student in the early 1980s. CASCA is a bilingual organization representing the professional anthropological socio-cultural community in Canada. Its 430-strong membership encompasses the academic community as well as anthropologists who work in government, museums, and other applied fields. In her new role, Prof. Harrison will manage the ongoing work of the association, which seeks to promote the work of socio-cultural anthropologists in Canada, support anthropological research, and disseminate anthropological knowledge in the academic milieu and to the wider community. Recent initiatives of the association include passing bylaw to facilitate, where appropriate, the society taking positions on matters of social and political policy. In addition, along with many other professional academic associations, CASCA has prepared a response to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council document, From Granting Council to Knowledge Council. As president, Prof. Harrison will also work with Professor Winnie Lem, who is the editor of the association's journal Anthropologica and a Trent faculty member cross-appointed in Women's Studies and International Development Studies. CASCA's yearly conference took place last month at the University of Western Ontario, in London Ontario. This year's conference theme was Citizenship and Public Space; 15 countries were represented by those attending and giving papers. Next year's annual meeting will take place in Yucatan, Mexico, where CASCA will partner with Facultad de Ciencias Antropológicas at the University of the Yucatan and the Society for the Anthropology of North America. The conference theme will be Translocalities. For the past three years, Prof. Harrison has also been coordinating the updating of the archival record of the association. Posted July 12, 2004 |
