Service to Students: ARUCC Conference FocusMore than 300 delegates from universities and colleges across the country will take part in the upcoming Association of Registrars of the Universities and Colleges of Canada Biennial Conference - The Service Transformation Summit, June 27 - 30 in Ottawa. Trent University Registrar Susan Salusbury, in her role as Ontario University Registrars' Association (OURA) president, is co-chairing the organizing committee while several staff members from the Office of the Registrar at Trent will also be in attendance. "This is a conference for registrarial types, presented by registrarial types. There are a lot of opportunities for the sharing of ideas and thoughts, and for picking up suggestions from people who understand what we are trying to do," says Ms. Salusbury. Experiences from across the country, from institutions of various sizes, are shared with colleagues and often spark ideas for how to do things a little differently in our home institutions. The focus of this year's conference, which is held in Ontario only every eight years, is the service expectations of students - something that is always at the fore in the provision of registrarial service. Aside from workshops led by individuals in the industry, there will be a panel of students from the Ottawa Region who will discuss their experiences and service expectations. Student service is at the core of the conference simply because that's what we do, says Ms. Salusbury, adding student privacy is becoming an increasingly important topic for these professionals. There will also be discussion around the rationalization of student services, which in part, would see students get the information they require regardless of which individual or department has it. Other sessions will focus on student records systems, admissions, financial aid and graduate studies. Canada Research Chair Michael Geist, who specializes in Internet and E-Commerce Law at the University of Ottawa, will be speaking on the topic of "Privacy and Expectations." On Tuesday, Neil Aitchison will discuss "The Power of Laughter". In addition to being Conestoga College's first graduate, Mr. Aitchison is an actor, former broadcast executive and radio personality. On Wednesday, in celebration of its 40th Anniversary, ARUCC will present Stephen Lewis to give the closing keynote address of the 2004 Conference. Mr. Lewis has had extensive experience as a politician, diplomat and humanitarian. A passionate advocate of the rights and needs of children, he was appointed Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in 2001. ARUCC was created in 1964 in response to the need for professional development for student administrative services personnel in universities. In 1974 the Association's name was changed to the Association of Registrars of the Universities and Colleges of Canada to reflect the increasing role of the colleges in this professional field and in the activities of the Association.
