Trent University Athletes Recognized by the City of Peterborough Trent University athletes were honoured with a number of Civic Awards, including Senior Female and Senior Male Athlete of the Year, presented by the City of Peterborough at a ceremony on June 1 at Showplace Peterborough.
Ms. Love was recognized for her contributions to the sport of rowing in Peterborough. A former Olympic athlete, Ms. Love has been involved with Trent Athletics and rowing for more than 25 years. At this year's Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Rowing Championships, Ms. Love was named by her peers, the OUA Men's Coach of the Year. This award is the culmination of an outstanding year for Mr. Van Rooijen, in which he won gold at the OUA rowing championships in the men's heavyweight single, as well as a bronze at the Canadian University Rowing Championships in both the heavyweight singles and the heavyweight eight. Mr. Van Rooijen was also named OUA Athlete of the Week for October 6th, and was featured in the Faces in the Crowd section of Sports Illustrated magazine as an up and coming athlete in North America. The Peterborough Civic Athletic Award of Merit was presented to two Trent athletes - swimmer Alex Babaris, and rower Rob Park. Mr. Babaris was the OUA swimming champion in the men's 50-metre fly, and the bronze medallist in the 100-metre fly. Mr. Park, was the OUA champion in the men's lightweight single, a silver medallist at the Canadian University Rowing Championships in the lightweight single, as well as member of the men's heavyweight eight with Mr. Van Rooijen, which garnered bronze at the Canadians.

"As you compete across the province and across the country, you make Trent University as well as Peterborough proud. Your commitment to your respective sports and your academics is truly admirable."

Head rowing coach Carol Love was named Senior Female Athlete of the Year, while rower and business administration student Peter Van Rooijen was named Senior Male Athlete of the Year for 2003. 
The Trent women's heavyweight eight rowing team was also honored with a Peterborough Civic Sport Award. The women's eight finished in second place at the OUA rowing championships, as well as a fourth place at the Canadian Championships. Members of the women's eight squad were, Lauren Chewter, Marie Leforme, Kristy Benesko, Lene Dover, Candice Harding-Calder, Julianna Stonehouse, Alicia Unrau, Kaitlin Byrick, Jackie Graff (Coxswain), Carol Love (coach).
