Trent Welcomes Review of Postsecondary Education

Following today's two-year tuition freeze announcement by Mary Anne Chambers, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, Trent University is welcoming news of the province's accountability review of the postsecondary sector.

In its announcement, the government pledged $41.7 million for universities and $6.4 million for colleges. The Council of Ontario Universities (COU) was seeking $50 million for Ontario's 19 universities. Details of how much funding will flow to Trent will be provided by the ministry in the coming days. Without compensation funding for the tuition freeze, Trent University faced a $500,000 shortfall in revenue.

"We appreciate the efforts of Minister Chambers to enhance access to a university education and the compensation funding for the first year of the tuition freeze," said Garth Brownscombe, Acting Vice President of Administration.

Acknowledging that the announcement provides only partial compensation to universities for year one, Brownscombe indicated that a number of funding issues related to the quality of the university experience remain unresolved.

"Through the upcoming provincial budget and the review of the postsecondary system to be conducted this summer, we hope to learn how the province will address a number of issues that are critically important to universities including the quality assurance fund, the costs of research, student aid and inflation."

Brownscombe added, "Trent is still trying to make up $1.4 million from lost government revenue due to cutbacks to Trent's provincial operating grant in the mid to late 1990s."

The review of the postsecondary system will begin this summer and conclude in the fall.
