Trent University's Academic Skills Centre Announces First-ever High School Essay Competition Cash prizes and publication in The Peterborough Examiner entice participation The Academic Skills Centre at Trent University is pleased to announce its first essay-writing competition, co-sponsored by The Peterborough Examiner . Eligible are grade 12 students at schools in The Kawartha-Pine Ridge District School Board, the Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board, Bethany Hills School, Lakefield College School, or Trinity College School. Students may win one of three monetary prizes, and the essay that wins the first prize will receive the further distinction of publication in The Peterborough Examiner , which is co-sponsoring the competition. First prize is $250, second prize is $100, and third prize is $50. The Academic Skills department decided to hold the competition to encourage excellence in academic pursuits. "We at the Centre want to contribute to the development, and the reward, of interest in analytic writing among senior high-school students in our surrounding communities," said Maged el Komos, writing instructor with the Academic Skills Centre and essay competition coordinator. "Naturally, too, we wish to communicate our University's high regard for this interest and its role in intellectual growth. Hence this competition, in which we hope many students will participate." Details of the competition are as follows: In no fewer than 1,400 and no more than 1,600 words, and using no fewer than two and no more than five sources, students should write an essay to discuss advantages and/or disadvantages of making Remembrance Day a nation-wide statutory holiday. Essay envelopes must be postmarked no later than April 15, 2004 and submitted to:
An acknowledgement of essay receipt will be sent to students' homes or e-mail addresses within one week of The Academic Skills Centre's receipt of your essay. The three prize winners will be notified by post between May 15 and June 1, 2004. A cheque for the prize value will be enclosed. The Peterborough Examiner publication date will be indicated to the first-prize winner in this notification. Other contest details: Citing and Documenting Sources According to The Modern Language Association Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (1999, or later, edition). Please note that citation of sources in the first-prize essay will be edited by Academic Skills Centre staff for the purpose of publication in The Peterborough Examiner . Form of Essay Submission Submit the essay on stapled paper; electronic submissions will not be accepted. On a title page, indicate your name, grade, school, home address, e-mail address if you have one, essay title, and essay word count (excluding the title page). Number the pages of the essay in the upper right corner of each page. Do not write headings or subheadings. Print in 12-point font size. Print in double-space. Indent the beginnings of all paragraphs after the first by 5 spaces. Please note: Do not place any information other than the page number on the pages after the title page; this is necessary, as the title page will be separated and your essay will be coded for reading without author identification.
