Trent
University's United Way Campaign Goes Above and Beyond
Faculty, staff, retirees and students raise
$60,135, surpassing their goal
The United Way donors at Trent University have outdone themselves, raising
an incredible $60,135.35 -- 13 per cent more than last year. The campaign
came to an official close October 17, at which time faculty, staff and
retirees had raised $52,000, but thanks to their generosity, pledges continued
to come in.
Trent support for the United Way grew stronger this year, with an increase
in donors from 195 to 219. Close to one-third of Trent's faculty,
staff and retirees contribute to the campaign. Also this year, the average
pledge increased slightly to $274.
This year's campaign started out on a high note with a kick-off
barbecue at which President Bonnie Patterson and Campaign Co-chairs Julie
Crook and Prof. Eric Helleiner presented a cheque for $23,059 to United
Way executive director Len Lifchus. These funds were raised within the
first three days of the campaign.
The campaign came to a close with equal momentum as students on the Champlain
College Cabinet hosted a seventies roller-skating party for students,
raising $660 for the United Way. Those polyester bell bottoms and that
incredible spirit of generosity signified the first time in a number of
years that students have contributed to the campaign.
Another highlight was Team Trent's participation in the yearly Ride
at the “Y” on November 5. A team of five riders raised an
amazing $1,277. And throughout the campaign, draw prizes, such as gift
baskets, gift certificates, and a grand prize getaway for two at the Irwin
Inn, were kindly donated, and awarded to donors to the campaign.
“There's a real sense of pride that comes with such an incredible
accomplishment,” says President Patterson. “The Trent community
has clearly demonstrated its commitment to the broader community and its
support for the many services funded by the United Way of Peterborough
and District. Thanks to all those who contributed and helped make this
year's campaign so successful.”
Much behind-the-scenes work took place to reach and exceed an already
ambitious goal - thanks to Campaign Co-chairs Ms. Crook and Prof. Helleiner,
as well as Brenda Blackburn, campaign co-ordinator.
