Trent University Recognizes 54 Academic All-Canadians Students with high academic averages who participate in varsity athletics honoured A celebration in recognition of excellence in athletics and academia at Trent University saw close to 60 students recognized as Academic All-Canadians November 27 at Trent University. The annual awards event, hosted by the Department of Athletics and Recreation, honoured students who participate in varsity sports and achieve an academic average of 80 per cent or higher. "This level of excellence in sport and scholarly accomplishment is truly exceptional," says Bill Byrick, Athletics director. "There is a balance that has to be struck to achieve so highly in both of these areas; it is a priority at Trent, to create an environment in which this type of balance is encouraged and supported. My congratulations to this incredible number of exceptional individuals, as well as the people who sustain them." Thirty per cent of Trent's 200 varsity athletes qualify as Academic All-Canadians, exemplifying the fact that being athletic doesn't have to come at the expense of being academic at Trent. The University has 19 varsity teams that compete within the Canadian Interuniversity Sport organization, Ontario University Athletics and Ontario Colleges Athletic Association.
