Trent Athlete Named Top in Ontario

Peter Van Rooijen has been named the Athlete of the Week for the Ontario University Athletic Association for the week of September 29 to October 5. Peter was nominated for the award after having won the local Rileys-Junction Trent University award given weekly to the top Trent Athlete. This is the first time in the history of Trent University that an athlete has gone on to receive the top honour in the OUA.

Peter won Gold in the University Heavy Men’s Single at the Head of the Trent Rowing Championships on October 4, maintaining his undefeated streak throughout the season. Peter’s versatility as a rower allows him to be a member of the Heavy Men’s 8 boat, which brought home the Silver. Peter, 21, is a 3rd year Business Student, who hails from Brockville, Ontario.

"It’s a great honour to win this award," said Van Rooijen. "My teammates and I have been training hard all season, and it’s great to get recognized for our efforts. Rowing at Trent is a perfect situation for me. It’s the best rowing facility in Canada, and I couldn’t have asked for better support from my teammates and coaches."

Peter is a former member of the World Junior team for Canada, and a Gold Medallist at last summer’s Under-23 World Championships held in Serbia last summer. "Peter was a prize recruit for us three years ago," added Coach Carol Love. "He’s just now reaching his maturity as a rower, and will continue to get better. It’s great to see that his maturity and dedication to the sport is paying off."

Entering the 2003 Varsity season, Trent Athletic Director Bill Byrick asked his coaches to "raise the bar" for athletic achievement and it is paying off. "It's great to see Peter and all of our athletes in all of our programs improve and excel. I am quite excited about the future of Trent Varsity Athletics. What we are seeing is a combination of dedicated and talented athletes, great coaching and leadership, combined with strong partnerships with local community sport organizations, such as the Peterborough Rowing Club. As we continue to develop, with the help of our sponsors, we hope to build those relationships, expand and improve our facilities and continue to provide our student athletes with strong academic and athletic opportunities," commented Byrick.

The Trent Rowers continue on their winning ways this weekend at the Brock Invitational, to be held at the Henley course in St. Catherines.
