Building Community, Changing Lives: Trent’s United Way Campaign Launches On October 1, Trent University’s United Way campaign will kick off with a barbecue from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on the bridge-level outside Champlain College. Hot dogs, hamburgers and pop will be served by celebrity chefs including Mayor Sylvia Sutherland, Executive Director, Peterborough and District United Way Len Lifchus and President Bonnie Patterson. Campaign co-chairs Julie Crook and Prof. Eric Helleiner will be on-hand, as will vocalist Jesse Parsons, a third-year Champlain College student don. A hamburger or veggie burger and pop will cost $3, while a hot dog or veggie dog and a pop will be $2.50. Thanks to Aramark Canada all proceeds from the barbecue will go toward the campaign total. Also at the barbecue, there will be opportunities to try mini-putting -- two dollars will get you three chances to putt and an opportunity to win fabulous golf prizes. Pledge forms for faculty and staff members will be available at the barbecue, and have also been distributed through the internal mail system. The pledge drive will continue through to October 17, but to be eligible for early bird draws, October 3, 10 and 17, submit your pledge form as soon as possible! There are incredible prizes to be won, donated by individuals as well as entire departments within the University. The grand prize is an Irwin Inn getaway for two. Last year, due to the generosity of University faculty and staff members and retirees, the $52,000 campaign goal was exceeded. The same goal has been set for this year, so take note of the rising thermometer at the entrance to the Symons Campus. For further information on the campaign, contact Brenda Blackburn, Ext. 1600 or visit www.trentu.ca/unitedway. Watch for the celebrity chefs!
What is United Way? United Way is a community-based, volunteer driven, not-for-profit organization that receives resources annually from corporations, employees and individuals. Those funds are then distributed to agencies and programs that provide essential and effective human care services.
