Trent Students Raise $800 Floating Their Boats Congratulations are in order following a successful first Float Your Boat For AIDS fundraiser on September 20 at Millennium Park in downtown Peterborough. Trent University students groups organized the event and through entry fees, barbecue and after-party proceeds, $800 was raised to help in the fight against AIDS. The funds were donated to PARN - Your Community AIDS Resource Network at the AIDS Walk in Millennium Park on September 21. "We’re really happy. We’ve had a lot of positive feedback and everyone had a really good day," said Mike Matheson, event co-ordinator, adding that the event will likely take place yearly. In an effort to give back to the community, the college cabinets launched the innovative fundraiser. Float Your Boat for AIDS saw teams of four build cardboard boats that carried one person 25 meters down the scenic Otonabee River. Twenty-eight teams, primarily made up of students, were involved in the event. The day kicked off with at barbecue at 11a.m. at Millennium Park in downtown Peterborough. At noon, teams received the only permitted boat building materials: cardboard, duct tape, and Styrofoam. Teams spent the next two hours building their watercraft. One team member then propelled their boat the length of the lagoon. Organizers pulled together prizes from local businesses for several different categories including Fastest Boat, Best Themed Boat, and Best Titanic (for the most spectacular sinking).
