Student
Swimming and Training at Trent
Though
it’s only the start of September, the staff in Trent’s
Department of Athletics and Recreation is ready to train University students
for their summer jobs, says Jordan Lyall, acting aquatic supervisor.
The
Allan Marshall Pool and its staff -- area leaders in training swimming
instructors and lifeguards -- are hosting a number of new programs
this fall, designed to train and provide recreational opportunities
for University
students.
"With increased
enrolment at Trent this fall, the Department of Athletics and Recreation,
like every department at the University, is striving
to meet student-need," says Ms. Lyall. "We want to ensure
we have a broader spectrum of programming available to students,
so that
we can meet their broader training and recreation needs."
Trent
Aquatics offers bronze medallion and cross, and leaders (an introduction
to instructing) courses, as well as National Lifeguard
Service, Red
Cross and Lifesaving Society Instructors sessions. Trent also offers
First
Aid and CPR training, and regularly holds advanced leadership-training
courses (i.e. First Aid Instructor.)
The following are
new-to-Trent student program offerings:
- Adult Bronze
Course, for students 17-years-old and up. This 12-week combination
course will
see students earn their bronze medallion and bronze
cross levels. This is often a minimum requirement for a camp
counsellor position. The maturity and
high-level of learning of university students allows for this joint
medallion/bronze cross course. Traditionally
these
courses are offered to youth in their early teens. The
cost is $158 (a $60-savings
to taking the courses consecutively) and the course starts
September 26. Students must register before the first class.
- In partnership with
Campus Recreation, the Department of Athletics and Recreation is offering
swimming for fitness clinics. For further information,
see the Campus Recreation Guide.
- For those interested
in doing lengths at the pool, clinics will be offered to teach flip-turning
and how to use lane swimming equipment like flippers.
These clinics will be offered throughout the year. For
further information, also see the Campus Recreation Guide.
- A student-only public
swim is scheduled weekly on Wednesday from 10:30 - 11:30 p.m.
