OCUFA Honours Outstanding University Faculty Trent Professor David Poole, Department of Mathematics, has been honoured by the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations as a recipient of a 2002 OCUFA Teaching and Academic Librarianship Award. "This year's award winners are a reflection of the enthusiastic talent and effective teaching found in university classrooms and library support services throughout the province's universities," said Dr. Henry Jacek, President of OCUFA. "Each year OCUFA is proud to honour individual faculty members at Ontario universities who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their respective disciplines," said Dr. Jacek. "The Teaching Awards are presented to professors who inspire and inform through their teaching, course development and research. They make a difference both to their academic discipline, and to the lives of their students, by offering the best they can professionally." Dr. Poole has been a mathematics professor at Trent University since1984, was Chair of the Mathematics Department from 1996-2002, and is currently Associate Dean of Arts and Science (Teaching and Learning). He received his B.Sc. from Acadia University and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from McMaster University. His research and publishing focus on the areas of algebra, discrete mathematics, and mathematics education; he recently published a textbook called Linear Algebra: A Modern Introduction (Brooks/Cole) that is used at over 40 universities and colleges around the world. Dr. Poole won Trent’s Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1995. Dr. Poole is known for using a variety of teaching methods to make mathematics accessible and exciting for students. "I am particularly proud to have initiated Mathematics 280, a course for preservice elementary school teachers," he says. "Many of these students are initially very apprehensive about mathematics. It is very rewarding to help them overcome their negative feelings about the subject and learn to appreciate it." His commitment to excellence in teaching extends beyond the classroom walls. He has initiated many enrichment activities for mathematics students at Trent and has been involved in outreach programs in local schools. "I was just thrilled to be nominated - I had tried to talk them out of nominating me because there are a lot of very good professors at Trent, but now I'm glad I didn't," laughs Dr. Poole. "I really respect the other people who have won this award, so it's all just really nice." The ceremony to honour this year's Award recipients takes place Friday, June 6, 2003 at 12 noon in the Spadina room at the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel, 475 Yonge St., Toronto. Posted May 15, 2003 |
