Trent University wins CCAE gold medal Trent University’s Communications Office has won a gold medal in the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education’s 2003 Prix D’Excellence competition. The gold medal has been awarded in the "Best New Idea: Creativity on a Shoestring" category. Trent submitted a promotional entry, a lunchbag designed as a giveaway for attendees at a 2002 announcement for the University’s new School of Education and Professional Learning. The lunchbag featured a beautifully-designed label that included the Trent logo, the School of Education name and a photo of Director Deborah Berrill with six local children. Inside the bag was an apple (a timeless symbol of teaching and also of the "sweet taste of success" in attracting a school of education to Trent), a report card that evaluated the strengths of the new consecutive education program, a brochure, and a University pen and a piece of bubble gum (because Trent intends for this program to stick around for a long, long time). At the November event, the lunchbags were set up on a table close to the main door of the Native Studies lounge, and the display was themed to match other promotional items at the event, such as a large poster on the podium that featured the same photograph and logo. The cost of each bag was only $1.45, and the simplicity of this creative project allowed the packages to be completed within a very short time frame. The "Best New Idea: Creativity on a Shoestring" category is a perennial favourite among participating universities and colleges, and always attracts a large number of entries. It is an honour to see Trent’s entry rise to the top as the best idea for 2003. Posted April 30, 2003
