Trent University Professor Receives Research Grant to Study Problem Gambling Behaviours in Post-Secondary Students

James D. A. Parker is the first Trent University faculty member to receive
funding from the Ontario Problem Gambling Research Centre.
The one-year grant (for $35,000) will allow Professor Parker and his colleagues in the Emotion and Health Research Laboratory at Trent University to study the link between emotional abilities, gambling behaviour, and academic achievement.
Recent research has demonstrated that problem gambling behaviour is on the rise among adolescents and young adults in Canada. Professor Parker’s project is designed to identify some of the psychological risk factors for gambling behaviour in students making the transition from high school to post-secondary institutions.
Along with contributing to our understanding of vulnerability factors associated with problem gambling in young adults, information generated from the project will be of interest to university and college administrators in Ontario preparing for a younger than usual first-year cohort.
Professor Parker holds the Canada Research Chair in Emotion and Health and is also an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology.
