Academic Skills a Top Priority at Trent University A valuable student resource at Trent University is the Academic Skills Centre. Located in Champlain College (across from the college office), this is a place where academic abilities can be honed, enhanced and refined. Martin Boyne is the director of the Academic Skills Centre, which moved to Trent’s Symons campus from Traill College earlier in the 2002/03 academic year. He is pleased with being relocated to the main Trent campus and feels student usage of the centre has increased dramatically this year. The centre features individual and group sessions for students. Mini courses and workshops are also offered regularly on a variety of topics, such as reading skills, essay writing, time management, study skills, grammar, mathematics and French. Approximately 80 students book appointments at the Academic Skills Centre each week, and the Trent English as a Second Language program involves approximately 60 - 65 students each term. A book published by Trent’s Academic Skills Centre is distributed nation-wide, and is an excellent guide for writing at any level. Titled Clear, Correct, Creative: A Handbook for Writers of Academic Prose, this is available on campus at the Academic Skills Office or the Trent University bookstore. With nine full-time staff and nine part-time staff, the Academic Skills Centre is a busy place and offers many opportunities for Trent students to maximize their academic university experience.
