Elder’s Conference Coming This Weekend This weekend, February 14 to 16, Trent University will host the annual Elder’s and Traditional Peoples’ Gathering. An annual event that has been taking place at the University for approximately 20 years, this conference involves First Nations people from across the continent. Guests and visitors come from far and wide to participate and listen to the invited elders at each gathering. The conference will feature traditional and contemporary teachings, Sunrise Ceremonies, workshops, and a Saturday night traditional social with dinner. Invited elders and traditional teachers this year include Laura Fitznor, Brian Loucks, Sylvia Maracle, Mike McDonald, Faith Pegahmagabow, Jake Swamp, Dorothy Taylor and Michael Thrasher. Workshops will also be led by Trent faculty, including Mark Dockstator, Edna Manitowabi, David Newhouse, Shirley Williams and Doug Williams. This event is free for Trent students and children under 16. Individual registration for the weekend is $15, and family registration is $25. You can register in person outside the Wenjack Theatre in Otonabee College on Friday afernoon and Saturday morning. A full conference schedule will be available as you sign in.
