Trent students in Peterborough and Durham gear up to present Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues
Valentine’s Day is rapidly approaching, bringing with it the annual V-Day Worldwide / College Campaign and some Trent University productions of Eve Ensler’s award-winning play, the Vagina Monologues.
The Women Studies class at Trent University @ Durham will put on benefit productions this week, on February 13, 14 and 15. All proceeds from the Durham events will raise money for local organizations that aim to stop violence against women and girls: Denise House, Bethesda House, Oshawa-Durham Rape Crisis Centre and the new Ajax-Pickering Women’s Shelter.

University @ Durham’s Performance of "The Vagina Monologues"
will be held at the
University Centre at Durham, 2000 Simcoe St. N, Oshawa, in room C-113
of the George Wiley Building. Tickets are $10 each and are available through
members of the Women’s Studies Group and at the door. Doors will
open at 7:30 p.m. each night for the 8 p.m. performance.
In Peterborough, performances will take place on February 26 and 28 at 8 p.m. in the Wenjack Theatre, Otonabee College.
"Part of what makes this event so powerful is the opportunity it offers to for students to interact with their local community," said Professor Jill Smith, who has taught the introductory Women’s Studies course at Trent@Durham for the past four years. "The entire community can participate in this global movement, to celebrate and honour women and girls. It is an opportunity to be part of a collective voice that says ‘no’ to violence against women and girls."
In 2002, V-Day was celebrated in 800 venues around the world. A variety of locations were involved, including an Anglican Church in Nova Scotia, a Maasai village in Kenya, a Lakota reservation in South Dakota, a stadium in Manila and a synagogue in Great Britain. This year V-Day expects to fill the halls and theatres of many more cities and towns around the world, spreading the hope of a violence-free world for women and girls.
