Trent students celebrate Black History Month
Members
of the Trent African Caribbean Students’ Union (TACSU), are excited
to be celebrating Black History Month with a variety of events on campus
and in downtown Peterborough. This year’s theme is "Different
Shades of the Same", to reflect the unity and diversity of TACSU
members.
The month’s program kicked off on February 1 with the second annual Afrobana event, held in the Great Hall. Approximately 200 people attended the function, which featured songs, dances, poetry and food.
Upcoming events include:
* a Valentine party will be held on Friday, February 14, starting at 9 p.m. at The Vibe. Proceeds from this party will help defray some of the costs of events organized for this month.
* on Saturday, February 15, Toronto writer and director of Education and Training Services, Akwatu Khenti, will speak at 6 p.m. at the Market Hall about Black History Month and the impact of black people in the fields of medicine, history and literature. Poetry and dancing will also be part of the evening’s program.
* the Great Debate and T-shirt day will be held on February 27 (location t.b.a.), based on the themes of equality and unity
There are approximately 70 students involved in TACSU this year, and the group is being co-chaired by Wanjiru Ng’ang’a and Nahaja McKenzie.
"I was pleased with the way Afrobana went, and with its reception. We were really pleased with the turn out and the support from the Trent community," commented Ms. Ng’ang’a.
