Trent University’s Founding President receives Order of Ontario

H.B. Symons was one of 25 individuals to receive the province’s
highest official honour, the Order of Ontario, at a ceremony Wednesday,
February 5, 2003.
Educated at the University of Toronto and at Oxford and Harvard Universities, Professor Symons was the founding president of Trent University and served as its president and vice-chancellor from 1961 to 1972. He has served subsequently as Chairman of the Commission on Canadian Studies, Chairman of the Commission on French Language Education in Ontario, and Chairman of the Ontario Human Rights Commission.
"In addition to his remarkable contribution to the evolution of Trent University, Professor Symons has continued to make a difference to important initiatives throughout the country," said president and vice-chancellor Bonnie Patterson. "The entire University community joins me in congratulating him on this great occasion."
Thomas H.B. Symons is a teacher and writer in the field of Canadian Studies, contemporary intellectual and cultural issues, and international academic and cultural relations. His is the author of To Know Ourselves, the Report of the Commission on Canadian Studies, and of numerous studies and articles dealing with education, public affairs, human rights, and international relations.
The Order of Ontario recognizes and honours those who have enriched the lives of others by attaining the highest standards of excellence and achievement in their fields. Also among the 25 recipients to be honoured are famed marathon swimmer, Marilyn Bell Di Lascio; hockey dad Walter Gretzky, and actor Tom Kneebone.
