Lowered flag to commemorate Remembrance Day The flag atop Trent’s Bata Library will be lowered to half-mast on November 11 to commemorate Remembrance Day. The decision to lower the Trent University flag followed a recent discussion at the federal government level. On October 31, local MP Peter Adams asked the House of Commons to consider having federal government office flags across the country lowered on November 11, and was supported by Minister of Canadian Heritage, Sheila Copps. Mr. Adams told the House: "For many residents of Peterborough and Peterborough County, flying the Canadian flag at half-mast is a way of showing proper respect for all those who served and sacrificed to preserve the freedoms associated with our democratic way of life." Members of the Trent community interested in attending a local Remembrance Day service have three options. On Monday, November 11, a Remembrance Day service will be held at the Lady Eaton College Pit, starting at 10:30 a.m. The ceremony will be one hour in length and refreshments will follow in the senior common room. For information call Arndt Kruger, principal of Lady Eaton College, 748-1011, ext. 1502. The second is a service in Lakefield. A parade will end at the cenotaph at 10:20 a.m. and the ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m. A third option is the Peterborough service. A parade will start from the PCVS parking lot at 10 a.m. and arrive at the cenotaph (across from City Hall) at 10:25 a.m. The service will begin immediately. Posted November 8, 2002 |
