Scholarship reception connects donors and recipients
On Wednesday, October 30, a scholarship reception at Trent University was held to connect scholarship donors and student recipients.
An annual event, the reception unites students and scholarship donors in a meaningful way. All students who have received a Trent scholarship were invited to attend, including recipients of the prestigious Champlain Scholarship, Board of Governors Scholarship, entrance scholarships and endowed scholarships.
This year, 966 Trent students were awarded scholarships based on their academic standing. This includes 564 entrance and in-course scholarships, 200 renewable scholarships, 153 international student scholarships and 49 graduate scholarships. Eighty-five of these students received additional recognition and were awarded one of the endowed scholarships established by donors to the University.
Margaret McGrattan, a daughter of Justice Sam Murphy and a graduate of Trent University, spoke at the reception. The Justice Samuel H. Murphy Scholarship was awarded for the first time this year and was established by friends, colleagues and family members to honour Justice Murphy. This year’s recipient is Kevin Young, an upper-year student studying Canadian politics and political theory.
Also speaking at the reception were two Champlain scholars, Jennilee Austria and Hesper Philip-Chamberlain, and the recipient of the Quaker Oats of Canada Graduate Scholarship in Canadian Studies, Mark Dickinson. Orm Mitchell, a professor of English literature and chair of the scholarship committee, and President Bonnie Patterson also addressed the gathering.
