Statistics Canada Socioeconomic Data (previously called CANSIM)

CANSIM is Statistics Canada's main socioeconomic database. Updated daily, CANSIM covers a large range of latest statistics available for Canada including in such key subject areas as: agriculture, business performance and ownership, construction and housing, culture, demography, domestic trade, economic accounts, education, energy, environment and natural resources, finance, health and social conditions, household expenditures, international trade, justice, labour, manufacturing, prices and price indexes, service industries, transportation, travel and tourism.

Data include series which are active and ongoing, and also some which are inactive and only available for historical periods.

Registered members of Trent University can access CANSIM using two different methods:

CANSIM through Statistics Canada

In June 2018 Statistics Canada revised its web site. CANSIM tables have been replaced by DATA tables with the same or similar content.  You can find a former CANSIM table by using the "Filter results by keyword(s)" option to type the number of the corresponding data table (e.g. 107-0001 and not CANSIM 107-0001). Redirects have also been implemented from former content to the equivalent new content.

CANSIM through CHASS

Members of Trent University also have the option of accessing CANSIM data through the University of Toronto's CANSIM through CHASS(Computing in the Humanities and Social Sciences) interface. Trent University Library has purchased a subscription to CHASS which includes a powerful new OLAP (On Line Analytical Processing) view.  Using the CHASS OLAP option is highly recommended for researchers wanting to manipulate and visualize data sets in different ways. The OLAP interface is user friendly for MAC and Windows computers. CANSIM through CHASS is available from any computer linked to the Trent network or by signing in through Trent proxy server from home (if you are off campus, and click on the links below you will be prompted for your Trent User ID and password).

License Conditions:

CANSIM through CHASS is available to registered members of Trent University for their research, instructional or learning needs.  Commercial use, transfer, resale, donation or exchange of data acquired through CHASS are expressly prohibited.

Data Access:

Access CANSIM through CHASS.  There are three options to choose from: CANSIM Multidimensional View, CANSIM Time Series View, and Historical Versions of CANSIM.  We recommend using the Multidimensional view for most research questions as this includes new OLAP interface view options. CANSIM Time Series View uses the same data feed as CANSIM Multidimensional view, but displays data using a former user interface.
