Trent in Ghana 2019 - 2020
Major: International Development Studies and Economics Minor
I was a participant in Trent in Ghana programme over the 2019-2020 school year. This year abroad allowed me to flourish academically and personally. I got to experience the delicious west African food, culture, and language. But above all, I got to make great connections with so many of my TIG peers. My host family experience was the best! My host dad took me and some of our fellow TIGers on a Tour of Cape Coast!
I was an intern teacher at Beacon Academy in Bolgatanga, Upper East Region of Ghana. Beacon Academy is a low fee private school that provides affordable education to children in rural areas. My task was to teach English 3 times a week to students ranging from grade 1to 6. On the weekends, I was a facilitator for the school's Girl's Empowerment Club. We explored gender, sex, hygiene, empowering their potential as girls, future women and as actors of change in their community. I studied the social and economic developmental power of education, furthering my understanding of development and translating theory into practice.
TIG fed my desire to travel and explore the world and further my career possibilities. The opportunities that the TIG program opens up for students can be endless. Ghana is a safe, beautiful, and lively country. I can't wait to go back and retrace my steps! I miss Ghana so much!
