For The 2022-2023 academic year, I had the privilege of participating in the Trent in Ghana program. which proved to be a profound journey of personal and academic growth. This program was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to immerse myself in the vibrant Ghanaian culture. Additionally, my time in Ghana allowed me to forge lifelong connections with my host family, my teachers, fellow TIG students, and other friends I made along the way. While in Ghana, I was also given the chance to explore the country and visit many of the natural beauties in the Central region, Volta region, Northern region, and the Greater Accra region.
For the second half of the year I worked as an intern at the Ghana Refugee Board at their main office in the capital city, Accra. The Board’s mandate is to provide care and protection for asylum seekers and refugees on the shores of Ghana. I worked primarily in the registration department. My placement gave me experience translating what I had learnt in my classes into practice. This expanded my understanding of government organisations and gave me an in depth look into the circumstances surrounding refugees.
Reminiscing now, I miss the lively and welcoming people, the West African music and cuisine, the absolutely breathtaking scenery of the Kakum National Park and Wli Falls dearly. I cannot wait until I am able to return and visit Ghana again. The memories and life lessons I got from TIG will remain with me forever.
