Class of 2000 (IDS & Economics)
The skills, knowledge and experiences that I gained from the International Development Studies Program at Trent University have been an essential part of my professional and personal development. The program offers its students the chance to develop a unique mixture of abilities while exploring the most pressing question of our age: the fight against global poverty. For example, the multiple lenses used throughout the IDS program, including anthropology, economics, history and politics, allows it graduates to view issues and events through a variety of perspectives. This skill has proved invaluable to me in my newest role as parliamentary intern working in Ottawa.
As a bonus Trent offers its IDS students the opportunity to explore development policy “in the flesh” by taking part in a number of year abroad programs. My time as a participant in the Trent-in-Ghana program marked a major milestone in my life and has changed the way I view both the world and Canadian society. For these reasons and many others I would I would urge any student who is curious about the world and concerned about its future to consider IDS as their path through academia. Even if not interested in a career in development, the experience will certainly be an excellent way to sharpen the mind and open the door to an interesting an exciting career as a citizen of the world.
