Health and Safety A-Z
Topic: Critical Injury
Summary:
A critical injury is any serious or life threatening injury. The specifics are defined by regulation (On. Reg. 834).
In Ontario employers must immediately notify the Ministry of Labour if a person is killed or critically injured at their workplace. The accident scene cannot be disturbed except to:
Save life and relieve suffering
Maintain essential services (eg. power, public transit)
Prevent unnecessary damage
Campus Security should be contacted immediately in the event of any serious injury at the University. Guards will assist with first aid and medical transport, and follow up to ensure Critical Injury reporting requirements are met. In some cases this will require securing the area until the Ministry of Labour and/or the police have completed their investigation.
