Health and Safety A-Z
Topic: Awareness Training
Summary
On July 1, 2014 health and safety awareness training became mandatory for all workers in Ontario.
Training is available for free through the Ministry of Labour, either as online training or a downloadable (.pdf) workbook. If you are a supervisor you should complete “Supervisor Health and Safety Awareness in 5 steps”, otherwise you should complete, “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps.”
These courses are available to University employees on Blackboard (the University’s online Learning Management System). University employees are encouraged to use Blackboard for their training.
Proof of training is required, so copies of training certificates (online training) or signed and dated copies of the quiz (workbook) should be kept in departmental files.
A centralized (i.e. University-wide) training database is required for compliance purposes. The database is managed by Risk Management and updated automatically by Blackboard, but all other (i.e. non-Blackboard) training must be entered manually. Managers with employees not trained through Blackboard should advise Risk Management by email, providing the employee’s name, the course completed (worker or supervisor), date of completion, and a confirmation that s/he has proof of training on file.
Awareness courses provided by other providers are acceptable as long as they meet the minimum requirements established by regulation. Contact Risk Management for more information.
