Health and Safety A-Z
Topic: Emergencies
Summary:
Departments, programs and work units should have procedures in place to deal with local emergency situations. Every member of the department should:
- be familiar with the University’s emergency procedures as described by the Campus Security website
- know how to contact emergency services (dial 911 for police, fire, ambulance) and Campus Security (dial 1333 from a Trent phone, 705-748-1333 from an outside line)
- know the 911 address of their work location(s)
There are Emergency Procedure posters available across campus which outline the steps to take in the event of an emergency.
Departments are encouraged to have:
- at least one employee trained as a fire warden
- at least one employee trained in standard level first aid
- and maintain at least one first aid kit (available from Risk Management)
All members of the department should be encouraged to take steps to prevent unnecessary loss. Primary research data and information, for example, should be backed up. Valuable or irreplaceable items (eg. artifacts) should be kept in a secure location, such as a locked, fire-resistant cabinet or a fire proof safe. Basic fire prevention practices should be understood and followed.
The University has established an Emergency Planning Committee, which meets regularly to prepare, plan for and practice University response to possible large-scale emergencies (e.g. the loss of a building due to flood or fire). In the event of such an emergency the Emergency Operations Control Group will meet at the University’s Emergency Operations Centre to direct the University’s initial response, co-ordinate with municipal emergency responders, and direct follow up to restore normal operations as soon as possible.
