The Trent Advantage

Enhance nearly any undergraduate degree with this unique preparatory pathway, boosting your chances of admission to medical schools through professional and international partnerships, gaining direct support to pursue a career in healthcare.

Trent’s Medical Professional Stream (MPS) combines the flexibility and prestige of a Trent degree with additional support and opportunities for students planning to pursue professional healthcare programs in medicine, dentistry, veterinary and optometry.

  • Taken alongside almost any Trent degree
  • Access to faculty and physician mentorship, volunteer opportunities, community-based research, and guidance to support your professional school goals.
  • Prepare for professional school entrance exams like the MCAT through carefully selected coursework and academic planning.
  • Boost your chances of entry into Trent's medical school partner institutions in Canada, the United States, and the Caribbean.
  • Popular undergraduate degrees to pursue alongside the MPS include: Bachelor of Arts & Science (B.A.S.), Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Biology, Biomedical Science, Health, or Psychology; Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Anthropology, Indigenous Studies, Sociology, Psychology or a joint major in Forensics & Arts.
  • Trent’s MPS pathway for Indigenous students provides a clear and well-supported route to medical, dental or veterinary school.

Program Possibilites

Add an Option to your Medical Professional Stream degree to explore an additional area of interest

  • Pre-Medical Studies

Medicine, dentistry, veterinary and pharmacy – just a few professional programs that require individuals to have a well-rounded background in the physical sciences and life sciences, as well as the social sciences and humanities. This option will help prepare you for a future in a medical profession and will give you a significant advantage when it comes time to prep for examinations like the MCAT or DAT.

  • Health & Medical Humanities

Learn about arts-based approaches to health, what it takes to make good ethical decisions in a medical context, and how the arts influence and are influenced by cultural views on health and wellness. This option encourages students to make connections between how we imagine health, illness, and disabilities and our lived experiences of them. Complete this option and be prepared for a wide range of health-related and caring professions in public health, bioethics, arts-based therapies, pharmaceutical sales, medical insurance, health communication, health administration, and health law.

  • Applied Ethics

With courses grounded in critical thinking, ethical theory, and applied ethics, this option is ideal if you are interested in everything from advocacy and public policy issues to working in the fields of medicine, law, environmental resource management, business, and computing.

Career experience while you learn

Every Medical Professional Stream student has a guaranteed route to paid, credited experience before they graduate.

Paid Co-op Available

  • Students may pursue paid co-op streams through their chosen B.A. or B.Sc. program, if available, when admission criteria are met.

Research Opportunities

  • Work directly with municipalities, community foundations, and non-profit organizations on community-based research projects to support local health initiatives.
  • Conduct your own undergraduate research on key topics such as access to health care, mental health and well-being, social determinants of health, and health policy.

Field Schools and Hands-On Courses

  • Join the Premedical Society or apply for the Trent University Emergency First Response Team to promote the health and social wellbeing of the community.

Study Abroad

  • Pursue medical and health professional studies abroad after graduation. Trent’s Medical Professional Stream connects you with direct-entry pathways to medical, veterinary, pharmacy, optometry and naturopathic medicine programs through partner institutions across North America.
  • Take your Trent education global. Spend a semester or year studying at one of Trent’s international partner universities, participate in a summer field course, or gain international experience through a placement or internship. With opportunities in more than 35 countries, you can broaden your academic perspective, experience new cultures, and build skills that prepare you for a global career.

Placements

  • Earn volunteer experience in a range of healthcare-oriented and other community settings, as well as not-for-profit organizations.

In Their Own Words

The MPS at Trent holds a special spot in my heart because it provided me with an abundance of resources that helped prepare me for medical school applications, interviews, and writing the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test)
