Indigenous Education Council
The Indigenous Education Council (IEC) at Trent University is comprised of Indigenous community members as well as faculty, staff, and students; along with other stakeholders. The IEC ensures that the university engages the Indigenous community in a meaningful way, responding to the needs of local communities.
Trent's IEC was formed in 1993 and has played a large part in creating and introducing new programming such as the Indigenous Studies Ph.D. program, the Indigenous Studies/Canadian Studies M.A., and the Indigenous Environmental Studies and Sciences program. The IEC provides input and direction for both FPHL and the Chanie Wenjack School for Indigenous Studies.
The IEC is comprised of the following community organizations:
Curve Lake First Nation, Hiawatha First Nation, Alderville First Nation, Scugog First Nation, Tyendinaga First Nation, Nogojiwanong Friendship Centre, Niijkiwendidaa Anishnaabekwewag Services Circle, Georgina Island First Nation, Rama First Nation, and the Peterborough and District Wapiti Metis Council.
