I am researching how the hardships of motherhood are perceived through victorian poetry, specifically the poetry of Christina Rossetti. I am looking at how the role of a mother is idealized in the victorian era, and how that was harmful to the mental health of new mothers who were struggling. Christina Rossetti's poetry, specifically her poems from "Sing-Song: A Nursery Rhyme Book" highlight infant loss, and mental health struggles of mothers that were not openly discussed in the Victorian era. My research will expose the detrimental effects that idealizing motherhood has on a mother's mental health.
