Normally, all MA/MSc and PhD students are supervised by faculty with tenure-track positions at Trent, who have been approved as graduate faculty by the GSC Advisory Committee on Appointments.
Adjunct Faculty
The School of Graduate Studies supports the participation of Adjunct faculty in graduate education. Adjunct faculty may be members of comprehensive or thesis/dissertation committees, and in specified programs, they may also co-supervise MA/MSc and/or PhD theses/dissertations. Some programs such as ENLS, however, allow sole supervision by Adjuncts who have expertise outside the realm of Trent faculty.
They can do so only under the following conditions:
- they must be adjunct faculty with a doctorate, in good standing with the program,
- have had co-supervisory experience with a graduate student who has successfully completed a graduate thesis at Trent University;
- have an office on campus.
Guest Committee Members
Programs may nominate the guest appointment of a thesis or dissertation committee member for the purposes of one committee. The Dean will approve the nomination, and may rely on the advice of the Faculty Advisory Committee to do so. Guest appointments are limited to faculty members with tenure-track positions and graduate faculty status at other universities.
Practices for Programs
Graduate programs may have additional stipulations for the supervision of graduate students by adjunct faculty.
Graduate Programs may develop their own guidelines on supervision, with the policy above as a minimum requirement. These program guidelines should be made available to the Graduate Studies Office for information.
