Background on the Jalynn Bennett Amphitheatre
Located at Catharine Parr Traill College
Catharine Parr Traill College is located in the heart of Peterborough, Ontario. It offers an important physical connection between the University and the greater Peterborough community. For over five decades, the College has been a hub for cultural expression, music, theatre, film, and debate where youth and community members mingle and engage with professional artists and scholars.
Curatorial Statement
Traill College has been an informal hub of community focused expression for five decades. Using the Jalynn Bennett Amphitheatre, the College will actively seek out new amateur and professional partnerships to foster innovative, community collaborations. We particularly believe that this space will offer young artists a much-needed place to experiment under professional guidance and mentorship. It is our hope that the Amphitheatre will be just the first step in the creation of a larger, year-round centre for arts and culture in the heart of Peterborough.
Community Focused
The Jalynn Bennett Amphitheatre project has been officially endorsed both by the EC3 (Electric City Culture Council) and the City of Peterborough’s Arts, Culture, and Heritage Advisory Committee. Reflecting the university’s commitment to the community, Traill College will waive rental fees for student, amateur, and non-profit groups that may want to use the Amphitheatre and will continue to seek out community partnerships. A special fund for maintenance and technological upgrades will also be set up to ensure the continued, subsidized use of the space by nonprofit community members.
