MAY, PETERBOROUGH. Water Awareness Walk, an initiative founded by Elder Shirley Williams in 2010, raises awareness about the lack of clean drinking water for Indigenous communities in Kawartha Lakes. On May 14th of this year, Elder Shirley Williams shared insights on the changing attitudes toward these walks, noting a shift from negative reactions by onlookers to support and active participation from observers.
"We’re walking for the seven generations, the children that are yet to be born … so that they may have clean drinking water." - Liz Osawamick.
“We try to teach everybody different ways to conserve water because it won’t be here if we don’t look after it. We believe that water is life and is a part of us,” says Elder Shirley Williams.
