Trans Day of Remembrance ~ Wednesday November 20th 2024
Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is recognized globally on November 20th as a day to honor those lost to transphobic violence and systemic erasure. TDOR is also a day for community action, to uplift trans, non-binary, gender-diverse, gender non-conforming, and Two-Spirit individuals. We invite community members and allies to join us on Wednesday November 20th for a day of events dedicated to remembrance, solidarity, and support. May we take this day as an opportunity to show up for our trans kin and community. And to reflect upon our shared responsibility to create affirming spaces of respect and care for all.

Gender Affirming Care Tabling Event
Wednesday November 20th at 11:30 AM - 3 PM
The Student Centre Atrium
Meet and connect with community partners, as well as on-campus and off-campus services that provide gender-affirming care and support. This is your chance to explore resources, discover supportive spaces, and learn more about the services available that empower trans, non-binary, gender non-conforming and Two-Spirit individuals. Join for button making, affirmation writing, self-care activities, flower gifting and more!
Caitlin Jacobs, Urgent Care Counsellor with Trent Counselling Services will be in the Peer Support space from 12 PM - 2 PM for anyone who needs to connect for support.

Poster Exhibit & Self Care Station

Discover impactful art by Forward Together and be inspired to create your own! A collection of posters exploring experiences of trans* community, resiliency and social justice will be displayed, alongside poetry. Prompts and art supplies will be available to support your own creative expression if you feel called to create your own.
The TCSA will also be facilitating a self-care station with extra special activities and items to tend to your wellbeing!
Communities in Transition: Strategies for Supporting Trans and Non-binary Students Workshop
Wednesday November 20th at 12PM - 1PM
Event Space in The Student Centre (room 1.07)
Facilitated by Anya Gwynne, Student Equity and Success Programs Coordinator, this workshop is designed for allies of the trans community. We’ll explore gender diversity, contemporary issues facing trans and non-binary people, and the impact of systemic erasure and violence. In the context of grief and loss on Trans Day of Remembrance, we’ll also discuss what’s at stake and take actionable steps to support and challenge harmful rhetoric in our communities. Whether you’re a student, staff or faculty member, this workshop welcomes all!
Food will be provided to participants.
Trans Day of Remembrance Vigil
Wednesday November 20th at 6pm
The Pit in Lady Eaton College
Gather with us for a brief yet reflective vigil hosted by Anya Gwynne, Student Equity and Success Programs Coordinator. The vigil will be a space to honour, mourn and remember trans and gender diverse lives lost to violence and systemic erasure. Electronic candles will be used to represent the light we carry for those we remember—loved ones, chosen family, community, and all those who have touched our lives. Stephanie Wildheart, Lady Eaton College Assistant will offer stone blessings with affirmations of love to anyone interested in receiving this community care.
Sarah Simpson, Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Coordinator with Consent at Trent will be available for anyone who needs to connect for support.

Anti-Islamophobia Training
About the facilitator:
Farheen Khan is the Principle Consultant at FSK & Associates and a Senior Level Executive within the Not for Profit and Charitable Sector. With over 20 years of experience, Farheen's passion and expertise is working with small to medium-sized organizations and taking them to new heights. Farheen is also a woman with lived experience of racism, islamophobia and identifies as a survivor of gender-based violence. She is the co-founder and Imama of Canada’s first Women’s Mosque, the Muslim Chaplain at Trent University and the Chair of the South Asian Advisory Council at the United Way of Greater Toronto. Farheen continues to advocate against Islamophobia and Anti-Muslim sentiment through her work in the community and in classrooms where she routinely speaks as a guest lecturer at universities and colleges including the University of Toronto, TMU, York University, Humber College, Sheridan College, and Centennial College.
Two sessions are being offered. You may attend one or both sessions. Please contact us by Friday October 25th to register.

During this session, the following 3 modules will be discussed:
Islamophobia 101: An Overview
This module discusses the context post 9/11 to now. A review of Islamophobia, its origins, its history in Canada and its impact on Muslim communities. The potential threats that exist for community members and general information on how to understand Islamic principles and values and common misconceptions that exist about Islam, Muslims, and Muslim communities in Canada and abroad.
How to be an ally to Muslim community stakeholders
This module explores the ins and outs of engaging with Muslim communities with respect and humility. Participants will learn about what it means to address the “othering” narrative that often is couched in an East vs. West perspective. Participants will also learn clear tactics to build alliances across communities for peace and justice.
Identifying and rectifying Islamophobic practices in the workplace
Through this module, participants will learn about how to embed anti-Islamophobic practices within their workplace or business, thus creating a supportive environment for Muslims amidst growing anti-Muslim sentiment.
November 21st from 2 - 3 pm
This module is geared in particular towards those working with, or offering services to Muslim women:
Increasing safety measures and improving support services for Muslim Women
This module addresses tangible safety measures that can be taken to ensure Muslim women feel safe and secure as it relates to hate crimes and hate incidents. Survivor stories of lived experience will also be highlighted.
Skills to Enhance Peer Support (STEPS)
STEPS (Skills To Enhance Peer Support) aims to develop skills to empower student participants to feel comfortable providing resources and referrals to members of the Trent community, and beyond, who may be experiencing moments of stress or distress. The program requires participants to take five workshops that focus on communication skills, bystander intervention and diversity and inclusion.

Practical Strategies for Supporting Individuals with ABI in the Justice System: A Case Study Approach

This presentation is designed to provide attendees with a better understanding of acquired brain injury and the challenges (physical, behavioural, emotional, and cognitive) that one may experience while trying to navigate a complex justice system. Through two case studies, we will highlight common difficulties as well as provide relevant, practical strategies that you can use to understand and support clients with acquired brain injury.
Speakers:
Karen Taylor, B.Sc., BST, CBIS (she/her) is a Behaviour Therapist who has been working in the field for 20 years at a community based ABI organization. She has an undergraduate degree in psychology, a diploma in Behavioural Science Technology, and is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist with the Brain Injury Association of America
Allyson Heidinga, BA (Hon), CBIS (she/her) is a Behaviour Therapist who has been working in the field for almost 20 years at a community based ABI organization, Dale brain Injury Services. She has an undergraduate honours degree in Kinesiology, a certificate in Applied Behaviour Analysis, and is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist with the Brain Injury Association of America.
