Trent is advancing research on healthy aging and helping reduce the long waitlist for aged care in Peterborough through implementation of a University-Integrated Seniors Village, anchored by a long-term care home.
Building on Trent’s reputation as a globally recognized age-friendly university and the research expertise in the Trent Centre for Aging & Society, the Seniors Village will provide in-depth learning opportunities for students, advance research into aging, while answering the urgent call for more housing in Peterborough.

University-Integrated Seniors Village Report Series
With funding from the Jalynn Bennett Estate held at Trent University, the University-Integrated Seniors Village Report Series was established in 2021 to provide information for Trent’s University-Integrated Seniors Village development. Hosted by the Trent Centre for Aging & Society, this three-report series features findings based on consultations with experts in the field, a review of academic, research and sector grey literature, and a profile of existing university-integrated Seniors Village initiatives around the world.
State of Knowledge Report
This report provides insight into five different seniors village models used both nationally and internationally to provide care for aging populations, and reviews the political landscape in Ontario, Canada in which Trent’s university-integrated seniors village will be developed. It also outlines the educational and research opportunities generated by university-integrated seniors villages and key areas that have been under explored.

Environmental Scan Report
This report provides a comprehensive review of 26 seniors’ villages from around the globe. The examples provided establish the types of seniors villages that are already in operation as well as those that are in development. Some of the seniors village case examples are integrated on or affiliated with a university whereas other examples have yet to be included on a university campus.
Potential for Innovation Report
This report provides an overview of the lessons learned from the university-integrated seniors village research report as well as potential areas for innovation that align with the Trent Lands and Nature Areas Plan.
