The M.A. in Interdisciplinary Aging Studies (AGNG) is a 24-month thesis-based M.A. program designed to foster an understanding of key conceptual and methodological foundations of interdisciplinary aging studies, executed from both research-based and applied (e.g., experiential learning) approaches.
It offers graduate students training in social science and humanities fields related to the study of aging, including social-cultural dimensions of aging; systems, services and policy; cultural/literary studies, performance, and creative arts; social justice, especially equity, diversity and inclusion; and professional fields requiring expertise in aging.
The M.A. program emphasizes the importance of developing skills in critical analysis of contemporary aging issues and practical approaches to aging-related challenges across different contexts – ranging from individual experiences of aging to the societal complexities of aging populations.
Year 1: Foundations and Research Engagement
The first year involves the completion of courses including Foundations in Interdisciplinary Aging Studies, Seminar in Interdisciplinary Aging Studies, Special Topics in Interdisciplinary Aging Studies, a Research Methods course, an Elective or Reading Course, and a Placement in Interdisciplinary Aging Studies. Additionally, students prepare their M.A. research proposal, including research ethics applications.
Year 2: Research Intensive
The research intensive year is focused on the implementation of the M.A. research project including primary and secondary data collection and analysis, writing and final submission for oral defense of the thesis. Students will engage in research design, ethics approval, enacting the research design, analyzing the findings, and writing the thesis. The final M.A. thesis is a mandatory professional practice experience where M.A. candidates complete their capstone experience in the program.
The MA in Interdisciplinary Aging Studies currently offers one intake per year, in September.
Admissions are accepted until April 1st, 2024, and are opened to international and domestic applicants.
