First Year Course Suggestions by Major

This is a list of majors and introductory course suggestions. Click on your chosen major or a major that interests you to see a summary of the first-year course requirements and the number of electives you should be planning.

Within some programs students have the choice to add a specialization (listed under the Program section of the Academic Calendar). Students are encouraged to check the required courses and pre-requisites if they are considering adding a specialization. A full list of Specializations and Options can be found on pages 521-544 of the Academic Calendar.

Remember that your University Degree and Academic Program requirements are located in the Academic Calendar.

Students must take at least 0.5 credit from the Approved Indigenous Course List (see p. 19 in Academic Calendar). It is recommended that you take this credit in your first year of studies. Arts, General/Honours (BA)

  • Arts General/Arts Honours are not themselves majors. If you receive notice that you are in Arts General/Arts Honours either you did not declare an area of interest on your application or you have accepted an alternate offer to the direct entry program to which you applied.
  • Since these are not majors there are no required courses. Please review the required courses for majors that you may be interested in.

Science, General/Honours (BSc)

  • Science General/Science Honours are not themselves majors. If you receive notice that you are in Science General/Science Honours either you did not declare an area of interest on your application or you have accepted an alternate offer to the direct entry program to which you applied.
  • Since these are not majors there are no required courses. Please review the required courses for majors that you may be interested in.

Possible Majors

Ancient Greek & Roman Studies

  • There are no required 1000L credits for this major. There are 1000 level AGRS, GREK and LATN courses available. If you plan on taking upper year courses in GREK or LATN and the Specialization in Greek & Latin, you may want to take some of the 1000L courses in these languages.
  • The rest of your course selection is flexible and consists of elective credits. 

Anthropology (offered on both Peterborough and Durham campus)

  • Required: ANTH 1001H.
  • For those interested in Archaeology (Category A), consider taking ANTH 1030H and/or 1200H.
  • For the BSc degree ANTH 1030H required.
  • For those interested in a science degree (BSc), consider taking your required 1.0 MATH credit (MATH 1001H, 1080H, 2081H and 2082H, do not satisfy the Mathematics requirement for a Bachelor of Science degree). MATH 1051H and 1052H are recommended.
  • For the BSc degree consider taking your additional 1.0 credit in BIOL, CHEM, MATH, and/or PHYS.
  • The rest of your course selection is flexible and consists of elective credits.

Archaeology

  • Required: 1.0 credit ANTH 1001H and 1030H (or AGRS 1001H).
  • Those interested in the BSc in Archeology also require GEOG 1040H and 1.5 credits from BIOL 1020H, BIOL 1030H, CHEM 1000H, CHEM 1010H, PHYS 1000H, or PHYS 1060H.
  • For those interested in a science degree (BSc), consider taking your required 1.0 MATH credit (MATH 1001H, 1080H, 2081H and 2082H, do not satisfy the Mathematics requirement for a Bachelor of Science degree). MATH 1051H and 1052H are recommended.
  • For those interested in the Specialization in Mediterranean Archaeology, take ANTH-AGRS 1200H.
  • The rest of your course selection is flexible and consists of elective credits. 

Arts & Science (Honours)

  • Required: ASCI 1001H, 1002H.
  • Students are strongly encouraged to take 1000 level courses that could lead to different majors/joint-majors/minors (see p. 48 of the Academic Calendar). Students are encouraged to include a mix of humanities, social science and science courses.​​​​​ 

Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

  • Required: BIOL 1020H, BIOL 1030H, CHEM 1000H, CHEM 1010H, and one of PHYS-BIOL 1060H or PHYS 1001H
  • 1.0 credit consisting of MATH 1110H and 1120H, or MATH 1005H with an additional 0.5 MATH (excluding MATH 1001H, 1080H, 2081H and 2082H,).
  • If you take all of the 1000 level required credits in this academic year, you will have up to 1.5 additional credits to choose: they are electives. Consider taking the required introductory courses in programs that you find interesting. 

Biology

Required for Single Major:

  • BIOL 1020H, BIOL 1030H, CHEM 1000H, CHEM 1010H, and one of PHYS 1000H, PHYS-BIOL 1060H or PHYS 1001H
  • MATH credit requirement: MATH 1051H, 1052H, and either MATH 1005H, or 1110H
  • 0.5 credit in a humanities subject (AHCL, ARAB, ASLA, CAST, CHIN, CUST, ENGL, FREN, GESO (WMST), GREK, GRMN, HIST, ITAL, LATN, LING, PHIL, RUSS, SPAN, UNIV (UNIV 1004H only), WRIT)

Required for Joint Major:

  • BIOL 1020H and BIOL 1030H
  • If you plan to do the joint major B.Sc. (science degree), you require MATH credits: MATH 1051H, 1052H, and either MATH 1005H, or 1110H

For those interested in the Specialization in Health Sciences: if you are interested in completing this specialization, take CHEM 1000H and 1010H. 

Biomedical Science

  • 5.5 1000 level credits are required for the Biomedical Degree: BIOM 1000H, BIOL 1020H or BIOL 1050H, BIOL 1051H, CHEM 1000H, 1010H, MATH 1110H, 1120H, 1051H* OR 1550H*, PSYC 1020H, PSYC 1030H, PHYS 1001H or 1060H.
  • *MATH 1051H or 1550H can be taken in your second year 

Business Administration (offered on both Peterborough and Durham campus)

  • Required for BBA: ADMN 1000H, ADMN 1221H, ECON 1010H, ECON 1020H, and ECON 1250H
  • Business Administration joint-major: ADMN 1000H, ADMN 1221H, ECON 1010H, ECON 1020H
  • The rest of your course selection is flexible and consists of elective credits. 
  • For those considering a specialization visit the Business Administration website for more information as several specializations require specific 1000 level courses. 
    • Students may obtain only one Business Administration specialization as part of a BBA or joint-major Honours degree.

Canadian Studies

  • Required: CAST 1100H and one of CAST 1101H, CAST 1103H, CAST 1104H, or CAST 1105H

Chemical Physics

  • Required: CHEM 1000H, CHEM 1010H, PHYS 1001H, PHYS 1002H, MATH 1110H, MATH 1120H, and COIS 1020H
  • MATH 1350H is a prerequisite requirement for many upper-year courses
  • The rest of your course selection is flexible and consists of elective credits. 

Chemistry

  • Required for Single-Major: CHEM 1000H, CHEM 1010H, PHYS 1001H, PHYS 1002H
  • Required for Joint-Major: CHEM 1000H, CHEM 1010H
  • Required for both Single-Major and Joint-Major: 1.0 MATH credit from MATH 1110H and 1120H, or MATH 1005H and one of MATH 1350H or MATH 1550H.
  • Students who major in Chemistry also require an additional 0.5 credit in MATH or COIS (excluding MATH 1001H, 1080H, 2081H and 2082H). You may want to take a 1000-level half-credit course that could meet this requirement.
  • The rest of your course selection is flexible and consists of elective credits. 

Child & Youth Studies (only available on the Durham GTA Campus)

  • Required: CHYS 1000H, CHYS 1001H, CHYS 1002H, SOCI 1001H, and PSYC 1020H or PSYC 1030H.
  • For those interested in taking Psychology courses at the 2000-level or beyond, both PSYC 1020H and 1030H are required.
  • The rest of your course selection is flexible and consists of elective credits. 

Climate Change Science & Policy

  • Required: CLIM 1050H, BIOL 1020H, ECON 1010H, ERSC 1010H, GEOG 1040H, MATH 1005H and 1051H, PHYS 1000H.

Communications (only available on the Durham GTA Campus)

  • Required: COMM 1000H, 1001H, WRIT 1001H
  • Recommended for all Communications majors: ADMN 1000H
  • Recommended for students taking a single-major in Communications CUST-MDST 1535H

Computer Science (offered on both Peterborough and Durham campus)

If you are considering a specialization, there may be additional requirements that you could include in your first year course selection, visit the Computer Science and Information Systems website.

If you are in the Computer Science Co-Op program, you are required to complete COIS 1400H. For additional information, see the Structure of Co-Op Option on the COIS department webpage. 

Required for a Science degree in Computer Science (single and joint-major):

  • COIS 1010H, COIS 1020H, MATH 1350H, MATH 1550H, and one of MATH 1005H or MATH 1110H.

Required for an Arts degree in Computing Systems (if Honours, joint-major only):

Computer Science & Physics

  • Required: COIS 1010H, COIS 1020H, PHYS 1001H, PHYS 1002H, MATH 1110H, MATH 1120H, MATH 1350H, MATH 1550H
  • You will have room for up to 1 additional credit that is an elective credit. 

Conservation Biology

  • Required: BIOL 1020H, BIOL 1030H, CHEM 1000H, CHEM 1010H, ERSC 1010H, ERSC 1020H, 0.5 PHYS credit from PHYS 1000H, 1001H, or 1060H and 1.5 MATH credit from MATH 1051H, 1052H, and either MATH 1005H or 1110H.
  • You will have room for up to 0.5 additional credit that is an elective credit. 

Criminology (offered on both Peterborough and Durham campus)

  • Required: CRIM 1615H, FRSC 1100H, INDG 1001H, SOCI 1001H, SOCI 1002H, and WRIT 1001H

Cultural Studies

  • Required: 1.0 CUST credit at the 1000 level
  • The rest of your course selection is flexible and consists of elective credits. 

Data Science

  • Required: COIS 1010H, 1020H, 1400H; MATH 1350H, 1550H, and one of MATH 1005H or 1110H;
  • 1.0 credit at 1000-level in chosen area of focus (excluding COIS courses)

Economics

  • Single-major (Honours, General), and Joint-Major (Honours) required: ECON 1010H, ECON 1020H, and ECON 1250H
  • Joint-Major (General) required: ECON 1010H, ECON 1020H
  • For those interested in a single or joint-major science degree in ECON, required courses in second and third year (ECON-ADMN 2200H and 3200H) meet the requirement for a MATH credit; therefore taking a MATH credit in first year is optional.
  • The rest of your course selection is flexible and consists of elective credits. 

Education - Concurrent Bachelor of Education - Indigenous Program

In addition to the program requirements listed below, students may choose to pursue a major in Indigenous Studies or another single-major General program in the first three years of study. Consider taking the required 1000L courses that could lead to a single-major General program.

  • If you are looking to teach at the secondary level, you will require two teachable subjects. We recommend reviewing the Bachelor of Education Admissions Handbook.

English Literature (offered on both Peterborough and Durham campus)

  • Required: 1.0 ENGL credit at the 1000 level

Environmental & Resource Studies/Science and B.E.S.S.

  • Required: ERSC 1010H and ERSC 1020H
  • For those interested in a science degree (B.Sc.), consider taking your required 1.0 MATH credit (Note: MATH 1001H, 1080H, 2081H and 2082H, do not satisfy the Mathematics requirement for a Bachelor of Science degree).
  • For those interested in the Specialization in Climate Change Science & Policy, take ERSC-CLIM 1050H.

Environmental Chemistry

  • Required: ERSC 1010H, ERSC 1020H, CHEM 1000H, CHEM 1010H, BIOL 1020H, BIOL 1030H, MATH 1005H, MATH 1051H, and one of the following: MATH 1052H or PHYS 1001H or PHYS 1060H
  • The rest of your course selection is flexible and consists of elective credits. 

Environmental Geoscience

  • Required: BIOL 1020H, CHEM 1000H, CHEM 1010H, ERSC 1010H, EGEO 1040H, PHYS 1000H or 1001H, MATH 1005H or MATH 1110H, and one of MATH 1120H or MATH 1550H
  • Consider including your 1.0 credit from Category A in your first-year course selection. Note many COIS courses in Category A require COIS 1010H as a prerequisite.
  • Students are encouraged to carefully plan when selecting courses to ensure they acquire prerequisites, particularly for ERSC 2240H, and GEOG 4080H. Recommended: ERSC 1020H. 

Financial Science

  • Required: ADMN 1221H, COIS 1020H, ECON 1010H, ECON 1020H, MATH 1110H, MATH 1120H, MATH 1350H and MATH 1550H 

Forensic Biology

  • 5.0 1000-level credits are required: FRSC 1011H, FRSC 1100H; BIOL 1020H, BIOL 1030H; CHEM 1000H, CHEM 1010H; MATH 1051H, MATH 1052H, and 0.5 credit from MATH 1005H or 1110H; PHYS 1000H, 1001H, or 1060H. 

Forensic Chemistry

  • Required: FRSC 1011H, FRSC 1100H; CHEM 1000H, CHEM 1010H; MATH 1110H, MATH 1120H; PHYS 1001H and PHYS 1002H. 

Forensic Science

Bachelor Science in Forensic Science (single major):

  • 5.5 1000 level credits are required: FRSC 1011H, 1100H; ANTH 1001H*; BIOL 1030H, 1050H, 1051H; CHEM 1000H, 1010H; MATH 1051H and MATH 1052H; PHYS 1000H or 1001H. 
  • *ANTH 1001H can be taken in your second year.

Required for Joint Majors (both Science and Arts):

  • Required: FRSC 1011H and FRSC 1100H.
  • Please note many upper-year FRSC courses require prerequisites from other disciplines. It is strongly recommended that you take at least some of BIOL 1030H and/or CHEM 1000H and 1010H and/or ANTH 1001H and/or PHYS 1000H, 1001H, or 1060H in order to meet pre-requisite requirements for upper level Forensic Science courses. 
  • Required: 1.0 MATH credit, 1.0 BIOL or CHEM credit, and 60% or higher in FRSC 1011H and 1100H are prerequisites for required course FRSC 2030H.
  • Please consider what will make up the other half of your joint major. You will need to take the required courses for that major in addition to the required courses for Forensic Science.

  • Required for the Honours single-major: PHIL 1200H or PHIL 2410H (following completion of 4.0 university credits).
  • For the joint-major in Philosophy there are no required first year courses.
  • For those interested in the Specialization in Ethics, you need 1.0 credit from PHIL 1000H, PHIL 1100H, or PHIL 1200H.

Physics

  • 3.0 credits at the 1000 level in Psychology and/or Humanities and/or Social Sciences (for a list of disciplines in the Humanities and the Social Sciences see the Academic Calendar p.20)
  • 1.0 credit in addition to the above (can be a science)

  • SAFS 1001H, SAFS 1002H, BIOL 1020H, ERSC 1010H, ERSC 1020H, and 1.0 MATH credit (recommended: MATH 1051H and MATH 1052H) (MATH 1001H, 1080H, 2081H and 2082H, do not satisfy the Mathematics requirement for a Bachelor of Science degree).
  • The rest of your course selection is flexible and consists of elective credits. 

Trent/Swansea Dual Degree – Chemical Engineering

  • Trent University, in partnership with Swansea University, United Kingdom, offers a dual degree leading to a Bachelor of Science (General) degree (BSc) and a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree (BEng). The program allows students to complete the requirements for both degrees in a structured four-year program of study.
  • Required: CHEM 1000H, CHEM 1010H, MATH 1110H, MATH 1120H, MATH 1350H, PHYS 1001H, PHYS 1002H, COIS 1020H, 0.5 INDG credit from the Approved Indigenous Course List, and any 0.5 elective credit. 

Trent/Swansea Dual Degree - Law

  • ​Trent University, in partnership with Swansea University, United Kingdom, offers a dual degree leading to a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree (BA) or Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and a Single Honours Law degree (LLB). The program allows students to complete the requirements for both degrees in a structured six-year program of study.
