Bicameral Governance
Trent University has a bicameral system of governance. The authority and responsibilities of our two governing bodies, the Board of Governors and the Senate, are delineated in the Trent Act. Both governing bodies are supported by the University Secretariat.
About Douglas Kirk
Chair, Board of Governors
Mr. Doug Kirk is President and founder of Durham Radio Inc., parent company and operator of stations in Ajax, Sunderland, Toronto, Oshawa, Hamilton-Burlington, Haldimand County, and coming later - Grimsby-Beamsville. In July 2021, Durham Radio Inc. was awarded an FM license in Vancouver, B.C.. Mr. Kirk has grown the organization from a single station to 8 stations since acquiring CHOO 1390 AM in Ajax in 1994. Previous work experience includes 8 years in commercial lending at TD Bank and 18 years at Burns Fry (now BMO Nesbitt Burns) as an equities analyst specializing in the cable TV, media, and telecom sectors where he climbed the ranks to become Managing Director in Investment Research. Mr.Kirk has a BSc. in Chemistry and Economics from Trent University (1974) and an MBA from York University (1976). Mr.Kirk has much experience on volunteer boards, including being a member of the Trent University Durham GTA Advisory Council, Co-Chairing the Trent Durham Building Campaign, being a member of Trent Philanthropic Advisory Council, serving as President of the Ontario Association of Broadcasters (2008-2016), President of the Farlain Lake Community Association and board member of the Federation of Tiny Township Shoreline Associations. Mr.Kirk is also an independent director of two BMO Financial Group mutual fund issuers. Doug's second three-year term on the Trent University Board of Governors began on July 1, 2023.
After his term as Vice-Chair from 2023-24, Mr.Kirk has been appointed as Chair of the Board for a two-year term commencing July 1, 2024.
