Thursday, May 9, 2013, Peterborough
Dr. Steven E. Franklin today informed the Board of Governors of Trent University of his intention to conclude his service as the institution’s president and vice-chancellor on June 30, 2014.
Following a one-year administrative leave, Dr. Franklin will return to Trent in July 2015 to pursue his teaching and research work in environmental remote sensing within the Departments of Geography and Environmental Resource Science/Studies.
“Trent University has made, and continues to make, major strides under the leadership of President Franklin,” said Anne Wright, chair of the Board of Governors. “Through a process of broad consultation, Dr. Franklin put in place the University’s first integrated plan, launching key initiatives to strengthen Trent’s academic excellence, strategic enrolment management, financial stability, and community engagement.”
With several initiatives in the integrated plan now nearing completion, Ms. Wright affirmed the Board’s full confidence in and support for Dr. Franklin in the final year of his presidential term. The Board is also pleased that, in Dr. Franklin, Trent University will have on its faculty an internationally-renowned environmental scholar and researcher.
“I am grateful for having had the opportunity to serve as Trent’s president during a pivotal time of institutional change and renewal, and proud of the progress we have made as a community toward a strong and distinctive future for Trent,” Dr. Franklin commented. “I remain committed to advancing Trent’s strategic priorities over the coming year, and will work with the Board and Trent’s senior executive team to ensure a smooth transition in leadership.”
Dr. Franklin joined Trent in 2009 following earlier academic and administrative appointments at the University of Calgary and the University of Saskatchewan.
Bryan Davies, chair of the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors, thanked members of the Advisory Committee to Review the Presidency, as well as those who had participated in the committee’s consultations. He noted that “the Board-approved Presidential Mandate for 2014-2019 is a challenging and exciting one, and will serve as the cornerstone for recruitment of a successor to President Franklin.”
Mr. Davies reported that a search committee will be constituted shortly to begin the process of identifying Trent’s eighth president and vice-chancellor, and the Board anticipates this work will conclude in time for a July 1, 2014 appointment.
