 Trent University’s Undergraduate Enrolment Increases in 2012FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Tuesday, November 20, 2012, Peterborough Trent is becoming the University of choice for more undergraduate students. Preliminary figures suggest that undergraduate enrolment has increased this year by 1.6 per cent with 118 more students attending classes compared to 2011. “This is great news for Trent University,” said Dr. Steven E. Franklin, Trent University president and vice-chancellor. “We have focussed on putting students first by offering quality education, a great student experience and a slate of new and existing programs that challenge and support individual goals. Clearly, our approach is resonating with students and our recruiters are doing a fabulous job.” Trent has seen an increase in undergraduate enrolment at both the Peterborough and Oshawa campuses, along with a modest increase in international enrolment. Total enrolment at Trent this year is now 7,578 undergraduates, however that number may change slightly when the official numbers are submitted to the Government of Ontario in December. The enrolment increase comes on the heels of a strong showing in Maclean’s magazine annual universities report and positive news from both the Higher Education Strategy Council’s (HESA) study on research in Canada and the Globe and Mail University Report. In Maclean’s Trent increased in the rankings over last year among the 19 primarily undergraduate institutions nationally. Trent also ranked number one in the key categories of Scholarships and Bursaries, Awards per Full-Time Faculty, and Medical and Science Grants. The University was among the top five for Student Awards (5), Student Services (2), Total Research Dollars (3), and Social Sciences and Humanities Grants (4). In the Globe and Mail study, published in October, Trent received top marks on many student satisfaction indicators:
HESA’s Measuring Academic Research in Canada: Field-Normalized University Rankings 2012, published in August, lauded Trent University’s publication record across the arts and sciences, stating that Trent “over-performs” in academic research nationally. Trent is also generating interest from a greater number of prospective students and their families. This year’s Fall Open House drew record breaking attendance. On Saturday November 10, 2012 approximately 2,300 visitors arrived in Peterborough to tour the Symons campus, learn about the vast array of programs and get a sense of student life at Trent. Attendance is up from nearly 1,200 visitors the previous year.
