Dr. Rory Coughlan Recognized for Teaching Excellence

Wednesday, December 9, 2009, Peterborough

Trent Psychology professor, Dr. Rory Coughlan, has been selected as one of 20 university and college teachers across Ontario to be short-listed for TV Ontario’s 2010 Best Lecturer competition.

“I am very humbled by this honour because my passion for teaching is also based upon many, many wonderful teachers I have had the honour of being a student of and in some cases being mentored by,” Professor Coughlan said. “I am also fortunate that Trent University gives me the opportunity every time I walk into a classroom or to meet with students individually, to be able to contribute to the development of this university and to the intellectual enrichment of the students in this way.”

According to one of his student nominators, "Dr. Rory Coughlan is by far the most inspiring, knowledgeable and interesting lecturer I have ever met. He taught me Social Psychology this year and each night I would come home and tell my family all that Dr. Coughlan taught me. I even took my 12 year old son to one of his lectures because I was so inspired. I could listen to him for hours and would take any of his classes, even if they were not part of my program because I would benefit greatly from the knowledge I would gain."

Prof. Coughlan earned his M.A and Ph.D. at the University of Victoria, British Columbia and has been teaching at the university level for 14 years – seven of which have been spent at Trent University. His interdisciplinary work allows him to engage with subjects in the fields of social and health psychology with special interests in health systems and behaviours, culture, communication, ideology, personal agency, aging and theoretical issues in psychology.

The TV Ontario Top 20 were chosen from among 332 nominated professors. Trent University was represented by 17 faculty from across 13 academic departments and Trent's two campuses in Peterborough and Oshawa. Next, the Top 20 will be reduced to ten finalists, who will be invited to deliver complete lectures on TV Ontario’s Big Ideas beginning March 6, 2010. Viewers will then be invited to grade each of the finalists and cast their vote for Ontario’s 2010 Best Lecturer. The winner will be announced on April 17, 2010. The winner's school is awarded a $10,000 TD Insurance Meloche Monnex scholarship.
