Trent University Invites Community to have Lunch with the Experts

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Free May 17 Event Will Feature Talks on Climate Change;
Peter Adams to MC Discussion

Thursday, May 10, 2007, Peterborough

All members of the community are invited to attend the inaugural Inside Trent: Lunch with the Experts event scheduled for Thursday, May 17 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Peterborough Waterfront.

At the event, three experts from Trent, two professors and one undergraduate student, will discuss the topic of “Climate Change: A New Reality”. The experts are: Dr. Chris Furgal, a professor of the Indigenous Studies Department and Environmental and Resource Studies program at Trent and the co-lead author of the International Arctic Science Committee-directed “Arctic Climate Impact Assessment”; Dr. Christine Freeman-Roth, a philosophy professor and an authority on the environmental ethics of climate change; and Robert Aingiliiq Tookoome, an Inuit student who has seen first-hand the alarming consequences of climate change in Canada’s north.

“Climate change is now considered the biggest environmental crisis of our time. Its effects are no longer simply projected for the future, but rather they are being documented by scientists and communities today,” says Dr. Furgal, who will be presenting his research on climate change and the human impacts in the arctic. “It is becoming an increasingly important social responsibility for us as citizens to learn what we can do to minimize our contribution to the problem.”

Professor emeritus and former Peterborough MP Peter Adams will emcee the event, which is sponsored by the Trent University Legacy Society.

All members of the community are welcome at this free event. Lunch will be provided. Limited seating is available. To reserve a seat, contact Sherry Booth at (705) 748-1011 ext. 7593 or sbooth@trentu.ca by Monday, May 14, 2007.

The new Inside Trent: Lunch with the Experts series has been launched as a community outreach event, designed to bring Trent’s experts to the community to facilitate a sharing of knowledge on topical subjects. This event will be held on an annual basis.
