Green Party Leader Elizabeth May to Speak at Trent University Climate Change Conference on March 2

Elizabeth May, leader of the National Green Party of Canada, will be a keynote speaker during the Climate Change Conference taking place at Peter Gzowski College, Trent University, on Friday, March 2.

Ms. May will be speaking at 7 p.m. about Canadian environmental policy in a presentation entitled “Kyoto: How to get from here to there”.

An environmentalist, writer, activist, and lawyer, Ms. May held the position of Associate General Council for the Public Interest Advocacy Centre prior to becoming Senior Policy Advisor to the federal minister of the Environment from 1986 until 1988. In 1989, she became executive director of the Sierra Club of Canada, a position she held until March 2006, when she stepped down to run for leadership of the Green Party of Canada.

The Climate Change Conference is a collaboration of the Trent Greens (Trent students affiliated with the Green Party of Canada) and the Kawartha World Issue Centre (KWIC). This event is intended to raise awareness about climate change from many different perspectives. In addition to the speakers, there will be a free screening of the film The Inconvenient Truth, a documentary on former U.S. vice-president Al Gore's campaign to make the issue of global warming a recognized problem worldwide.

The emissions created for this conference, after conservation efforts, are being offset by Climate Care, a UK-based company. This includes all transportation to and from the conference of everyone attending.

All activities will take place at Peter Gzowski College, located on Trent’s Symons Campus at 2510 Pioneer Road in Peterborough. There is no registration required to attend this conference. Most events are free of charge, and some are $5 or by donation.
