Trent University’s athletic director Bill Byrick announced today that a new 1,000-seat stadium will be completed on Symons campus by June 30, 2007 to ensure it is ready in time for the 2007 U-19 Women’s World Lacrosse Championships.

“It’s an exciting time to be at the end of the planning phase for the new stadium,” says Mr. Byrick. “We’ve been pushing hard to create something the community will take pride in when we welcome the world to Peterborough this August.”

Mr. Byrick explained that the selection process for contractors is now complete, the design is finalized, and the building plans are ready to go. Construction will begin as soon as the weather gets warm in the early spring.

This new stadium will feature bleacher seating for 1,000 people, a new score board, an outdoor sound system, and a fully-serviced press box able to support live broadcasts and web-casting.

“When it’s built, this stadium will be one of the region’s premium athletic facilities, and a real resource for the community,” said Mr. Byrick. He went on to note that since Trent’s artificial turf playing field opening in September 2005, 50% of its usage comes from community bookings.

In addition to the new stadium, Trent has also completed a new natural turf athletic field on the campus’ east bank. This area will support three practice lacrosse fields, and will be used by the athletes during the Women’s World Lacrosse Championships for warm ups.

The 2007 U-19 Women’s World Lacrosse Championships will be held at Trent University from August 4 - 12, 2007. These championships will mark the first time a world-level sporting event has ever been hosted in Peterborough.
